The last great capital of the Khmer Empire, home to Bayon Temple and its more than 200 giant smiling stone faces.

History: Built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, Angkor Thom (“Great City”) covers 9 km² and is surrounded by walls and a moat. At its center stands Bayon, with 54 towers carved with calm, smiling faces. Nearby are the Baphuon temple, the Terrace of the Elephants, and the Terrace of the Leper King. Opening hours: About 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM (can change with the season) Tickets: Included in the Angkor Pass. Tickets are checked at the entrance gates. Best time to visit: Early morning or late afternoon, for soft light on the faces and fewer crowds. How to get there: About 1.5 km north of Angkor Wat, entering through the South Gate with its rows of stone gods and demons.
